The family of an 18-year old who was shot and killed by police officers attempting to search his residence for two stolen PlayStation 3s have been awarded $2.45 million, reports MSNBC. Peyton Strickland of Wilmington, North Carolina, was suspected of stealing two PS3s from a fellow student. The 20-year old had queued outside his local Wal-Mart for three days to pick up two consoles at launch back in November 2007 in the US. While he was taking the consoles home, four men jumped him and battered him with a blunt object and took the consoles by force.
Suspect Strickland was shot after police officers went to his house intending to search the premises and arrest the teenager. At the time, one of his roommates told the media that Strickland had been unarmed, and walking to answer the door when he was shot and killed.
Strickland's family has been awarded a $2.45 million settlement, and also received an apology from Sherriff Sid Causey, who said that he took full responsibility for the actions of his deputies whilst on duty.
