As the situation delves deeper into the discovery phase, 3Dfx has, by amendment, named VideoLogic in its suit against NEC and Sega, in which 3Dfx claims that Sega has breached its contract to codevelop a customized 3D graphics chipset for the Sega's new home console.
3Dfx is claiming that VideoLogic and NEC "induced" Sega to breach its contract and, "caused through their actions" Sega to switch to NEC and VideoLogic as the provider of 3D graphics technology. The complaint alleges that Sega gained access to 3Dfx's technology, then canceled the contract, without justification, in favor of rival chipset manufacturer NEC.
NEC has funded VideoLogic in the past and the two worked together to produce and manufacture the Power VR chipset, a direct competitor of the 3Dfx Voodoo product line, and implemented technology of the Sega-Japan's new console system: Dural.
Neither 3Dfx nor VideoLogic spokespersons were able to comment further on the case since the action is a pending legal matter.
