TOKYO - Sega showed off the latest version of the Dreamcast console to the Japanese press - not a final machine, but not a mock-up either.
There have been several changes from the models previously shown. The Sega logo is located on the front panel of the machine, and it has a fan to keep the system from overheating (ahem, Sony). The total Dreamcast package includes the console, one controller, a power cable, an RCA video cable, and a modular cord that connects to a telephone line.
The Dreamcast's own high-density CD-ROM is being called GD-ROM, Giga Byte Disk-ROM. This will be the official name. As the name itself says, it can hold one gigabyte of data. This makes it about double the size of a standard CD-ROM. Since GD-ROM is based on standard CD-ROM technology, developers won't have problems making games with the new format. At the same time, because GD-ROM is a somewhat different format, it discourages illegal copying of games... at least for a while.
There is one more connector at the back of the console. According to Sega, it's a serial port. But it's not currently known what type of peripheral or connection it will have (maybe a printer or keyboard to be released at a later time).
