Microsoft has now sold to retailers (that is, shipped) more than 80 million consoles across the world, the company announced today as part of its NPD report for September.
Xbox 360 software sales in the United States alone reached $401.2 million in September, the biggest month on record for the company and more than any other console in the US. Grand Theft Auto V was likely a contributor to that milestone, as that game alone made up more than 50 percent of all US software sales in September.
Lastly, Microsoft said the Xbox 360 remains the number one selling console in the US for 2013, moving 1.6 million units this year.
Notably, Sony's PS3 was the top home console overall in September, breaking the Xbox 360's 32-month streak from January 2011 through August 2013. The NPD Group said the PS3's upswing this month was largely driven by sales of the special 500GB GTAV bundle.
The Xbox One launches on November 22 for $500.
