After nearly three decades, the classic Super Mario RPG is back and as quirky as ever. This one-of-a-kind take on both the Super Mario universe and RPG genre is packed with unique mechanics, secrets, and puzzles that may be a bit perplexing for new players at first, but we’re here to help you.
Warning: The following article contains SPOILERS for Super Mario RPG.
Super Mario RPG contains a number of puzzles, but by far the most complex sequence takes place in the Sunken Ship level in Chapter 5. This section requires you to solve six smaller puzzles to earn clues, which you have to decipher to figure out a password. It can be quite a trial if you don’t know what to do, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered…
Partway through the Sunken Ship you’ll come to a series of six rooms, each containing a puzzle or small challenge. Complete them and you’ll get a clue. You then have to use the clues to determine the password to continue. Now, you don’t have to do any of these puzzles/challenges if you know the password, so if you want to skip all that just scroll on down for the answer. But if you want to play the game as originally intended and get all the clues, we can help you out with each one of the individual rooms.
Room 1 – In this one, you need to get the paratroopa to knock the metal ball down on the green switch. He’ll follow you around from above as you move. The trick is to get him to approach the ball from the direction opposite the switch without getting blocked by the pillar holding it up.
Clue – There is an “S” in the word.Room 2 – You need to hit the blocks to stop the bouncers in the right places so the metal ball will bounce over them to the switch. This can be a bit frustrating – you might think spacing them evenly is the thing to do, but the middle bouncer needs to be a slightly off-centre to the right, closer to the switch.
Clue – “It is found on the bed of the ocean.”Room 3 – Okay, for this one, you need to make your way through a maze that you can’t actually see. Head into the ground-level entrance, go as far forward as you can, then take a right. When you hit a dead end, turn right and jump up a small unseen staircase. Head back in the direction you came. You should emerge so Mario is now visible, but on the second floor. Once you go around the corner you’ll drop down a step. Turn left and drop down again. Now, you have to move in sort of a corkscrew, jumping up stairs until you emerge from the hole near the green switch. I know this may all sound a bit confusing, but with a bit of trial and error you should find your way through.
Clue – “It has two vowels.”Room 4 – Follow the trail of coins around the room, jumping on all the platforms they pass over. Do it correctly without falling you get the clue.
Clue – “It’s very valuable.”Room 5 – You have to hit the first “J” switch then properly time hitting the 3 cannonballs that fire off in order to hit the other J switches.
Clue – “’It’ is actually a ‘they’”Room 6 – Push the conspicuous-looking barrel down from the stack, roll it onto one of the switches, then push the other switch yourself.
Clue – “The ‘R’ comes before the ‘L’.”Okay, in the next room there are a series of 6 J blocks that let you pick from a set list of letters to spell the password. Have you figured the clues out yet? Or have you just scrolled down here for the answer? Either way, the solution is…
ANSWER – “PEARLS”There you have it! You’ve bested the toughest puzzle in the game… with a little help.
