Sea of Thieves Adding Private Crews, Three Teams Are Working to Get Updates Out Quickly-November 2024
Nov 23, 2024 2:45 AM

Now that Sea of Thieves is out and in a relatively shipshape state, it’s time to start adding some much-needed new content. To that end, Rare has kicked off a new series of developer videos designed to keep players up-to-date with Sea of Thieves’ continued development. You can check out the first episode, below.

Rare hopes to release new content on a very regular schedule. According to Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate, Rare has a full three teams working hard to make that happen…

“We've changed the structure of the team to enable us to bring as much new content to players as possible. The team is now split into 3 separate teams -- there's one team working on The Hungering Deep, there's another team working on Cursed Sails, and another working on The Forsaken Shores.

The way the teams are structured, they have their major features they're looking to deliver for their update, but there also working on weekly events. I would consider [The Hungering Deep] to be a medium-sized update […] but if we look beyond that to Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores, the teams working on those have a bit of a longer lead time, so those are going to be larger content updates. That's the rhythm we want to get into. As The Hungering Deep team finishes their work up in May, they're going to be starting work on the next content update [beyond Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores].”

In the short term, Rare plans to release a series of smaller patches that will clean up lingering launch bugs and add a handful of new features. These will include the ability to hand items directly to other players, and the much-demanded option for friends-only private crews. Private crews will likely be included in next week’s update.

Sea of Thieves is currently available on PC and Xbox One. The Hungering Deep will launch later this month, while the Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores updates are slated for sometime this summer.
