ESPN college football historian Beano Cook and I have at least one thing in common. We both kind of dislike baseball. Well, to be fair, Beano despises America's pastime--he thinks of the coming of spring training and the long, endless summers leading up to the beginning of college football as one interminable nightmare. I don't necessarily agree completely with Cook, but I understand the sentiment.

　　Even though college football doesn't end until the new year (or, speaking as an Auburn fan, as soon as the Tigers trash Bill Callahan and his Cornhuskers in the Cotton Bowl), the baseball season--at least the virtual kind--is just now heating up. We know a little bit about 2K's The Bigs, as well as EA Sports' next MVP college baseball game but, up until now, we didn't know anything about Sony's MLB 07. I got a chance to play the game last week at Sony's latest press event and the game seems to be--once again--literally jam-packed with content. The new features that focus on the pitching game seems to be cool, and the new road-to-the-show twist on career mode seems great as well. In a way, it feels a lot like Madden NFL 07 player-specific positional gameplay. Though let's not forget that the MLB series was doing career modes several months before Madden NFL 06 introduced it.

　　So, yeah, I may not be a huge baseball fan but I'm definitely interested in seeing more of what Sony has in store for us with MLB 07, as well as how the game looks on the PlayStation 3. Remember, this is the franchise that turned around the studio formerly known as 989 Sports. Now that they have a winner, the next step is making sure they maintain that consistent high level of quality that fans will now be expecting year after year.
