Fame Game February 2009-September 2024

Welcome back to GameSpot AU's monthly series, where we give you the best of gaming in popular culture. This month: games make it big in film and TV; the King of Pop sells his arcade collection; and someone makes some Left 4 Dead porn.

First up, it appears that video games are becoming an increasingly popular topic with American TV and film writers. The new TNT show Leverage, starring Timothy Hutton, follows a team of thieves who act as modern-day Robin Hoods. Hutton plays an out of work former insurance investigator who puts together a team of elite dudes and dudettes each with their own special set of skills, a-la Mission Impossible. In one of the early episodes, the hacker/internet junkie of the team has a conversation about World of Warcraft with an employee of the company he's supposed to be 'infiltrating':

  Him: "For the Horde!"

Employee: "For the Horde! You play World of Warcraft?"

Him: "Are you kidding? Did you get the new expansion pack? Woman, I was up all night! Burning Crusade was great but this new one? It's mind-blowing!"

American TV characters love playing World of Warcraft.

The writers of Lost are also getting into games. It seems the third episode of the fifth season employs a first-person shooter camera angle for a few minutes while one of the characters holds a gun in hot pursuit. Meanwhile, someone plays the Wii in Entourage, and the DVD release of Pixar's animated feature Wall-E features four old-school arcade games featuring characters from the film. Finally, advertising and promotion for the upcoming film Watchmen based on Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name includes an eight-bit side-scrolling mini arcade game. The UK website for the film lets users play the characters of Nite Owl or Silk Spectre, who walk around town kicking bad guys in true eight-bit style. Check it out here.

Moving on, remember those wacky Pez dispensers? Well, gamers can now get their candy hit without putting down the controller. Someone (we don't know who) has made these babies:

Pez (or something like it) now comes in Wiimote!

Now for something a little raunchier. It seems like someone enjoyed Left 4 Dead a little too much, and decided it'd make the perfect premise for a porn film. Titled Left 4 Head, the erotic horror flick features everything you'd expect to find in this category of film, with some zombies thrown in for 'fans of the game or interracial sex'. Sorry guys, we can't give you a link for this one.

Finally for this month, wacko-Jacko (a.k.a Michael Jackson) is selling his impressive line-up of arcade machines collected during his lifetime. A catalog by Julien's Auctions shows Jackson was seriously into games, with everything from video game arcade machines like X-Men, Crazy Taxi and Super Street Fighter II, pinball machines, a plastic horse ride and even an air hockey table. Apparently, Jackson was a fan of puerile amusements.
