Zynga tests Bitcoin as payment option
Zynga tests Bitcoin as payment option-January 2024
Jan 6, 2025 3:22 PM

Social gaming company Zynga announced it has partnered with BitPay, a Bitcoin service provider, and will now accept the cryptocurrency in a few of its Zynga.com web games.

If you've managed to avoid the many news stories surrounding Bitcoin in the past few months (and the more amusing Dogecoin), it's an open source, peer-to-peer technology that relies on cryptography to control the creation and transfer of digital currency.

"Zynga is always working to improve our customer experience by incorporating player feedback into our games," the company said. "We look forward to hearing from our players about the Bitcoin test so we can continue in our efforts to provide the best possible gaming experience."

Zynga first posted the news to the r/bitcoin sub-reddit, saying that it's testing the payment option only on Zynga.com (meaning not on Mobile or Facebook), and only in FarmVille 2, CastleVille, ChefVille, CoasterVille, Hidden Chronicles, Hidden Shadows and CityVille.

You may not play and even actively despise Zynga games, but there's no denying the influence the rise of social games and microtransactions had on the games industry overall. It'd be interesting to see if the Bitcoin payment option catches on with Zynga.com players and if other developers will follow Zynga's lead.
