Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom - Depths And Chasms Guide-November 2024
Nov 21, 2024 5:22 AM

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Depths is the game's underground region. Accessible via different Chasms, the locations presents new challenges, as well as opportunities for exploration. Here's our guide to help you with the Depths and Chasms in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Depths and Chasms guide

The Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Depths region can be entered via Chasms in the Surface region. These appear as large crevices on the ground, with red liquid known as Gloom that's spilling out. When you do see a Chasm, simply jump down and accelerate. However, make sure you glide as you're about to hit the bottom.

Below, you can see an example of an area with three Chasms as they appear on the Surface map. As for the Depths map itself, you can see it by pressing down on the D-pad. Since the Depths world mirrors the Surface world, it's almost as large as its counterpart.

This section of the map has three Chasms that lead to their respective sections in the Depths.

Light sources: Lightroots and other items

The first thing you'll notice when you're in the Depths is the poor visibility due to sheer darkness. It's enough to give anyone a fright, and that persistent dread lurking around the corner. Thankfully, there are some ways to shed a light:

Lightroots - By far the most important feature in the region, Lightroots are akin to Skyview Towers. While they certainly won't launch Link high into the air, they'll act as fast travel points, as well as reveal sections of the map. Those areas will then have a brighter glow compared to places with untagged Lightroots.Brightbloom Seeds - When possible, try to bring a lot of Brightbloom Seeds with you. These can be thrown or attached to an arrowhead. Once it hits a solid surface, it creates a decent light source.Poes - Poes represent the spirits of the dead, somewhat, and they appear as small floating flames. While they won't give off as much light as other sources, they can act as an indicator of solid surfaces and possible points of interest. Plus, you can collect them so they can be exchanged for rewards from Bargainer Statues. If you've been running around to tag the Skyview Towers in the Surface region, then you're going to do the same in the Depths.

Gloom debuff and cleansing

One more factor you have to contend with in the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Depths region is Gloom. While the red substance can be seen on the Surface region, it's quite plentiful in the Depths. Gloom takes effect if you're standing within the red liquid for a few seconds, or if a Gloom-afflicted enemy hits you with an attack. The debuff locks out one of your hearts, preventing that segment from being healed (technically reducing your maximum HP).

There are a few ways to cleanse Gloom:

Leave the Depths and return to the Surface or Sky regions.Stand within the center of a Lightroot.Cook and eat meals that use Sundelion as an ingredient. This is a plant that's mostly found on floating islands in the Sky region.Gloom is a deadly debuff, so make sure you stay away from it.

Zonai facilities, upgrades, and the Depths quest chain

There are many opportunities to explore and discover new things in the Depths. Here are some tidbits to consider:

This is where you'll start the quest chain to obtain the Purah Pad Camera and Sensor. The region has numerous mines and ore deposits where you can farm Zonaite. In turn, you'll be able to increase your Energy Cell capacity. This is also where you'll learn the Autobuild system. The main quest in the Depths involves following where the statues are pointing at, eventually leading to Zonai facilities. You'll also have to face a recurring foe. You can learn more in our Master Kohga boss guide.Follow the direction that the statues are facing to reach new areas where you'll do battle with Master Kohga.

Finding more Lightroots (spoilers)

This part is somewhat spoilery, but here goes:

Lastly, if you're looking for more Lightroots to show more of the Depths map, you can rely on Shrines. True, while there are no Shrines in the Depths, the Lightroots correspond to Shrine locations, and vice versa. In fact, their names are also in reverse (i.e. Gatakis Shrine on the Surface is Sikatag Lightroot in the Depths). So, if you found one or the other, just remember that their counterpart will be in the same spot.

There are numerous mechanics and facets to learn in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. For more information, you can visit our guides hub.
