Dolby Laboratories has announced that the Microsoft Xbox will include the new Dolby Interactive Content Encoder, which dynamically encodes multichannel audio into the Dolby 5.1 format. Using the technology, the Xbox will be the first console that will be able to provide real-time Dolby Digital 5.1 during actual gameplay, instead of during cutscenes alone. The Nvidia media communications processor will be able to produce Dolby Digital audio encoding on the fly with no game-performance penalty.
"We have chosen to incorporate the Dolby Interactive Content Encoder into the Xbox format because of its ability to deliver a superior multichannel audio experience to the gamer,'' J Allard, general manager of Microsoft's Xbox platform, said. "We're delighted that the Xbox is the first gaming platform to be able incorporate real-time Dolby Digital effects into gameplay.''
The Xbox will launch this fall in North America.
