Today during Sony's Gamescom briefing, Ubisoft announced that its Watch Dogs movie will be produced and distributed in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment and New Regency.
Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet reiterated that Ubisoft will have a "strong creative voice in the film's development."
President of Sony Pictures subsidiary Columbia Pictures Hannah Minghella said in a statement that Watch Dogs' gameplay and themes are "perfect" for the big-screen. She added that the franchise has "tremendous potential" as a motion picture.
No director has been named for the Watch Dogs movie, nor has a cast or release date been announced.
Ubisoft previously launched a poll asking fans who should play the lead role of Aiden Pearce in the Watch Dogs movie, with fans calling for Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise.
Ubisoft has a total of six movies in the pipeline. In addition to Watch Dogs, the French publisher is making movies based on its Far Cry, Rabbids, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon franchises. In all instances, Ubisoft will retain creative control.
Watch Dogs launches later this year on current- and next-generation consoles, as well as PC.
