Based on Games Workshop's fantasy tabletop game of the same name, Warhammer Online is an ambitious massively multiplayer strategy game currently in development at Climax. The game is set in an area of the Warhammer fantasy world of Reikland that spans some 400 square kilometers and features hundreds of varied locales for you to explore, including towering mountains, dark forests, dank dungeons, and large cities. Adding to the variety of the Reikland environment will be a dynamic weather engine that sees conditions constantly changing and even reflects the changing seasons.
You'll enter the world of Reikland as a human, dwarf, halfling, high elf, or ogre living on the margins of society, and you will then have the option to develop your character any way you like using the game's comprehensive skills and career system. The game will support both player-versus-environment and player-versus-player combat, but because Climax is going to great pains to ensure that the game remains true to its roots, you will not be able to play as "evil" races such as orcs and skaven, since seeing these characters out adventuring with humans or doing their shopping in the city of Altdorf just wouldn't ring true. The player-versus-player combat in Warhammer Online will also stick with its origins, occurring primarily between mutually antagonistic high-level characters, bounty hunters, and outlaws, for example.
Unlike the cities in many massively multiplayer online games, those in Warhammer Online will be large and complex enough for you to spend weeks exploring their winding streets, markets, palaces, and sewer systems. You might even decide to apply for a job in the city and try to make a name for yourself before venturing out into the wilderness.
No concrete release date for Warhammer Online has been announced at the time of writing, but we'll bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.
