Dragon Quest, more Sonic for Dreamcast - what else do you need? We're deep into the middle of the summer, and while the industry gears up for its fall and winter releases, there's plenty of news on the horizon. In the coming weeks we're sure to hear much more about Dreamcast as the October Tokyo Game Show approaches. Already, Dreamcast seems to pop up everywhere in the news.
If you've missed the big headlines this week, here's the rundown of what was making news this week:
The first details on Enix's Dragon Quest VII have emerged, including artwork by Dragon Ball Z artist Akira Toriyama. While the game is still planned for release around next summer in Japan, it's never too early to begin early hyping, especially when Final Fantasy VIII has taken up so much of the news lately. Don't forget to check out new details on the Game Boy version as well.
Dreamcast continues to be a major news item. This week, more details emerged on Sonic Adventure, NEC InterChannel announced two titles for the machine, and Hudson threw its support behind the DC with a new title as well. Can Bomberman DC be far away? Let's hope not. Here are three Dreamcast stories that appeared this week.
A demo of Final Fantasy VIII popped up in Japan late last week accompanying Brave Fencer Musashiden. We've got a massive amount of pictures from the demo so you can see for yourself what it looks like, as well as a movie of one of the battles. If you're an RPG fan, it's a must-see.
More retrogaming action is headed for the N64. Activision's Asteroids and Battlezone are coming to the N64 via Crave Entertainment.
Nintendo of America announced the addition of three major N64 titles to its Players Choice line. Among them is GoldenEye 007, which is nearly a year old. All the titles will carry new, lower price tags beginning at the end of August.
Atlus is giving players a chance to rent Kartia (its new strategy RPG) before they can buy it. Beginning in early August, players can rent Kartia from Blockbuster before they'll be able to buy it at local game shops. This type of early rental release has become quite popular lately, with companies making games available to rental stores sooner to drive up demand for the title when it does become available.
Finally, we posted new screenshots and details on a bunch of new titles this week. If you're a fan of any of these games, you'll want to check them out. Also, we've got a roundup on new titles from Take 2 Interactive, including its PlayStation title Monkey Hero.
