According to Scarborough Research, if you live in Detroit, Louisville, and Memphis, you're in one of the top three cities as far as percentage of the population that plays video games.
The list looks like this (and sadly, this reporter does not live in any of the top cities):
Detroit - 46.1 percentLouisville - 43.1 percentMemphis - 42.2 percentSt. Louis - 41.8 percentSalt Lake City - 41.6 percentRaleigh-Durham - 41.6 percentCincinnati - 41.6 percentDallas/Ft. Worth - 41.0 percentNorfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News - 40.9 percentBuffalo - 40.5 percent
Cities where video games haven't grabbed as much of the population include Milwuakee (32.7 percent), Tampa-St. Petersburg-Sarasota (31.4 percent), and West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce (29.8 percent) - ranking 48 out of the top 50 cities in the survey.
The survey found that owning a system doesn't lead to buying the latest and greatest games, and that relatives without game systems sometimes buy games for those that do. Cities that ranked at the top of the heap with respect to buying games in the past three months are New Orleans (15.4 percent), Washington DC (15 percent - now we know what games the President plays), and Detroit (14.3 percent).
Scarborough surveyed 173,000 adults in 60 of the biggest US markets.
