Steven Polge, AI programmer for Epic Games, posted a comment on the game's official message board about the development of the free bonus pack Epic has planned for Unreal Tournament 2003. Polge avoided any promises of a release date, noting that development on the bonus pack has taken longer than expected due to work on some necessary patches (including patch 2199 to address the previously reported security flaws in the Unreal networking code) and special modifications to the game for the German market.
Epic's upcoming free bonus pack will include nine maps, three new game modes, and three extra announcer voices. The new modes include mutant, where one of the players in the game is faster and has regenerating ability. The player who kills the mutant takes its place, and the player who spends the most time as the mutant wins the match. Last man standing is an updated version of the original Unreal Tournament game mode. The third new game type is called invasion, which involves cooperative play as all the human players attempt to fight off constant waves of attack from computer-controlled aliens.
