According to a Reuters report, US District Judge Robert Lasnik today issued an order blocking enforcement of Washington state bill HB 1009, which was signed into law in May. The law was scheduled to take effect on July 27 and would have imposed a $500 fine on retailers who sell any game depicting violence against "law enforcement officers" to those under age 17.
The judge said that those who have legally contested the bill--which includes the US video game industry association, the ISDA--have raised serious concerns about the constitutionality of the law. The Washington state representative who wrote the law noted that the injunction may be temporary and that the case will likely go to court.
