Unreal Engine 5 Return to Castle Wolfenstein Fan-Made Remake Looks Amazing in Playable Demo-December 2024
Dec 20, 2024 11:06 AM

It has been a while since a new entry in the Wolfenstein series was released on PC and consoles, and if you have been missing the series, you will be happy to know that a playable demo for a Unreal Engine 5-powered fan-made remake of Return to Castle Wolfenstein is now available for download.

The remake, whose demo only includes the first map of the game, was developed by Christopher Sewell, a level designer who worked on multiple Unreal Engine 3 and Unreal Engine 4 projects. While the map doesn't include much real gameplay, as it features no enemies, it is undeniable that it looks stunning, as the developer used the power of the Unreal Engine 5 to modernize the first few beats of the now-classic game properly.

Unreal Engine 5 has yet to be widely adopted by video games, and it's only this year that the first titles powered by the engine started getting released on PC and consoles. Among the latest is The Lords of the Fallen, a new entry in the soulslike series which is not as accomplished as its main inspiration or other similar recent titles like Lies of P, as I highlighted in my review.

Lords of the Fallen boasts impressive visuals and an interesting story for a soulslike, but unfortunately, that's where the praise ends. Despite functional gameplay and a well-designed world, the experience is marred by frustrating combat mechanics, subpar enemy placement, and an overall lack of polish, making it one of the most frustrating soulslikes ever released.
