Sony is not planning for upcoming exclusives to run across both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, according to PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan.

　　Speaking to GamesIndustry.Biz, Ryan was asked whether Sony is planning on a strategy similar to Microsoft with regards to supporting exclusives across two generations of hardware. Ryan explains that Sony has always believed in generations, and that software should represent that new capabilities of new hardware. As such, Sony is not planning to make upcoming PS5 games compatible with the PS4, with Ryan saying that Sony plans to deliver software that can only be enjoyed on its new console.

　　"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5," Ryan concluded.

　　Microsoft is taking a different approach, with the company declaring that its exclusives during the first two years of the Xbox Series X will run on the Xbox One as well. It's not the only point of deviation either, with a report claiming that Sony is putting the responsibility of backwards-compatibility in the hands of developers, and not enhancing its titles with system-level features like Microsoft is on the Xbox Series X.

　　We're scheduled to learn more about the PS5 very soon, with Sony hosting a digital event on June 4. We already know about the PS5's hardware and new controller, so Sony is expected to start showing off games for the console at the event too.
