On Monday afternoon, Dynamix and Sierra announced yet another addition to the extremely popular Starsiege Tribes lineup. However, unlike both the original Tribes and the Tribes II sequel announced at E3, Tribes Extreme will incorporate single player action into its gameplay.
Those single player aspects of Extreme include training missions designed to teach first-time users about squad-based warfare. Naturally, Tribes Extreme will also come with a full range of multiplayer innovations that have made the series so popular. Numerous enhancements like new player skins, maps and the addition of enemy AI will be implemented as well.
According to Dynamix lead designer Scott Youngblood, Tribes Extreme is being built around the latest version of the Tribes engine (v1.6), and not that of the visually stunning Tribes II. Regardless, Tribes Extreme will come with full OpenGL support, a feature that the first release sorely lacked and left gamers without a 3dfx video card to play the game in software mode.
Youngblood told GameSpot News that fellow Dynamix designer Scott Rudi will take the reigns of Tribes Extreme while Youngblood oversees the development of Tribes II - due out this fall and next spring respectively.
