Activision first teased that it had big changes in store for its Tony Hawk franchise in May 2008, when publishing label president Mike Griffith said of the skateboarding series that it "won't be your father's Tony Hawk." Little was it suspected that Griffith's statement was actually quite literal, in that Tony Hawk: Ride's all-new skateboard peripheral doesn't exactly accommodate those with rickety knees or a weak back.
Do NOT attach wheels to this board. Gamers will soon have a chance to hop on that new peripheral, as Activision announced today that Tony Hawk: Ride will be available in North America on November 17, with the British and German release following on November 20. Though Activision has yet to announce a price point for the peripheral-equipped Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii title, retailers have indicated Tony Hawk: Ride will sell for $120.
Tony Hawk: Ride's most distinctive feature is, of course, the wireless full-sized skate deck that comes with the game. According to Activision, the board will use "a combination of accelerometers and motion sensors" and will require no other controller.
The game will also include a comprehensive in-game roster of some of the biggest names in professional skateboarding. Paul Rodriquez, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins, Christian Hosoi, Cara Beth Burnside, and Mike Mo Capaldi are among the 12 sponsored skaters to appear in the game.
With Tony Hawk creators Neversoft tied up on Activision's lucrative Guitar Hero franchise, Chicago developer Robomodo has been given the reins to the Tony Hawk franchise. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Tony Hawk: Ride.
