The upcoming Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands will have cross-play support for all platforms at launch, Gearbox's Randy Pitchford has confirmed.
In a tweet, Pitchford thanked the engineers at Gearbox Software for handling the technical considerations of getting the job done. He also extended a thank you to 2K Games and Microsoft and Sony for coming to terms, politically speaking, to allow cross-play.

Now Playing: Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands | Dark and Powerful Classes
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will ship on March 25 with full cross play for all platforms at launch, including PlayStation. Incredible work from the engineers at Gearbox Software with thanks to our partners at 2k Games and 1st parties, including Sony, for working together on this. pic.twitter.com/J1SV7HgnhW

In another tweet, Pitchford asked fans to be patient and understanding because there might be technical issues with how cross-play is implemented in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.
"Please take it easy on us if there are hiccups. This is hard stuff and none of the platforms were designed for this. We’ve done impossible work to make it happen and to try to make it as easy to use as possible, but this is new territory and the wild is not a test environment," he said.
Twice in his tweet Pitchford singled out Sony/PlayStation, suggesting the company was not originally on board with the idea. That wouldn't be surprising, as Sony apparently blocked cross-play in Borderlands 3. Sony has historically not been the strongest supporter of cross-play.
During the Epic vs. Apple trial, documents submitted to the court revealed that Sony would require that developers adding cross-play functionality to their games pay a royalty fee. Sony would calculate this fee based on the popularity of the PlayStation version of the game in question, and how much money it made on the PlayStation Network.
Cross-play support for all platforms in Borderlands 3 might be coming soon, however, as Pitchford says he sees that as being "inevitable" now that cross-play is coming to Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. The game currently supports cross-play between Xbox and PC, but not PlayStation.
Keeping communities connected like this is generally a good thing that people like, so it's nice to see Tiny Tina's Wonderlands have full cross-play support. Pitchford's tweet doesn't get into the specifics of how cross-play will work in in the game, but those details should come soon given the game launches on March 25 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
