Publisher EA has announced that The Sims 4 will receive a substantial update this fall on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One that aims to fix issues with hairstyles and skin tones.
The Sims 4's executive producer Lyndsay Pearson posted the announcement to Twitter, confirming that the update will "address the visual issues with current skin tones [while releasing] more options this year." Specifically, the patch will target the "blotchy artifacts and ashy tones" that were introduced in previous Sims 4 updates.

"We hear you and recognize that we have not done enough to address the variety of skin tones and hairstyles that you expect to find in The Sims 4," Pearson said. "While we have made additions and improvements and fixes in the past, there is much more for us to do. We are making it a priority to release more options this year, as well as to address the visual issues with current skin tones--specifically, to improve the blotchy artifacts and ashy tones. We've iterated on these before, but we are doing a deep dive into our full pipeline to trace our assets through every step and compare the before and afters to assess any loss in quality."
Pearson said this update is not just about inclusion but "authentic and respectful inclusion," claiming the studio is taking feedback from all over to inform the work and decisions that go into building an inclusive game so that EA is held accountable.
"[Part] of that accountability is communicating to you; we will strive to keep you as up to date and informed as possible. So, as a start, we're promising to fix the visual artifacts with existing skin tones and increase the number of tones available in The Sims 4 this Fall."
This announcement comes two months after a Change.org petition went live imploring EA to create a color wheel and additional skin tones for better representation. The petition has since amassed over 85,000 signatures.
In other Sims 4 news, a reality competition TV show called The Sims Spark'd premiered last month on Buzzfeed Multiplayer and TBS. The competition, which wrapped up on August 7, featured 12 contestants creating Sims, building things, and more for a $100,000 cash prize.
