The big screen adaptation of the classic arcade game Rampage is now shooting and will hit theaters in 2018. The movie stars Dwayne Johnson, who has now revealed some new plot and production details.
Johnson took to Instagram to speak about his character and what audiences can expect from the film. "I head up an anti-poaching unit out of Rwanda," he said. "My best friend is a rare albino gorilla named, George. Very bad people infect George, an alligator, and a wolf with a serum. All three animals grow at an unprecedented rate. Their size, speed, agility, and violent aggression is off the charts.
"They go on a deadly rampage and want to destroy the world. George not happy. Me not happy. When animals like you, they lick you. When they don't like you, they kill you. I will hunt down the bad people who did this to my best friend. And when I find them, I will not lick them."
Johnson also revealed that the movie's visual effects would be handled by WETA, the New Zealand-based studio best known for its pioneering work on the Lord of the Rings movies.
"We have the best VFX monster-making team (WETA) on the planet," he said. "Our actors and crew have been working very hard to raise the monster genre bar. As always, let's have some fun. Let's shoot."
Rampage is set for release on April 20, 2018. It's directed by Brad Peyton, who also worked with Johnson on the 2015 disaster smash San Andreas.
In January, Peyton explained that the movie might "surprise" audiences. "We're going to build a movie, like San Andreas, that is really going to surprise people in what it delivers," he said. "It's going to be a lot more emotional, a lot scarier, and a lot more real than you'd expect."
Rampage was originally released in arcades back in 1986 before being ported to more than a dozen other platforms--it's appeared on everything from the Commodore 64 to the PS2. It's also seen a number of sequels produced, though by the time the movie comes out, it will have been more than a decade since the last of these, Total Destruction, was released.
