The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Sold 18.5 Million Units in 1.5 Months-October 2024

Nintendo's financial results for Q1 2023 (April-June) are out, confirming the incredible success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The sequel to Breath of the Wild sold 18.5 million units in roughly a month and a half, considering that the quarter ended on June 30th and the game was released on the Nintendo Switch console on May 12th.

Nintendo had previously revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million units in the first three days of its launch. The sales results are unsurprising considering the critical acclaim enjoyed by the sequel, which is sitting at a 96 average critic score on OpenCritic and Metacritic, making it one of the top-reviewed games of all time.

Wccftech's Nate Birch wasn't quite as enthused with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, rating it 'only' a 9 out of 10 in his review.

As much as I enjoyed the vast majority of my time with Tears of the Kingdom, toward the end of my playthrough, I felt something I don’t often feel with a Zelda game – a desire to wrap things up. To be done. I didn’t feel that with BotW, which I played for far longer than I had to before I finally tackled Ganon, because I was just so immersed. Some of the enchanting, indelible moments I experienced exploring this Hyrule the first time around just aren’t replicated in this sequel, but perhaps expecting that of TotK isn’t realistic given the nature of the project. And hey, it’s not like I didn’t play a ton of Tears of the Kingdom. My Switch gameplay log says I’ve devoted over 60 hours to TotK and I’m sure to sink even more hours into the game, even if I don’t tackle it with quite the rabid enthusiasm at BotW before it.

While it doesn't factor in the aforementioned sales figures, a lot of fans are playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on PC, too, thanks to emulators like Ryujinx and Yuzu. This version also allows a variety of gameplay mods, which we have listed in this article.

In other news from the earnings release, the Nintendo Switch reached 129.53 million units sold in total, thanks to the 3.91 million units sold in the last quarter. Beyond The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, other factors were the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which accelerated sales of various Mario titles. Chief among them was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which sold another 1.67 million copies last quarter, for a lifetime total of 55.46 million units. The game continues to be a fan-favorite thanks to the continuous updates, the last of which went live last month.

In other Nintendo news, Switch 2 rumors are thriving more than ever. The first info on potential specs leaked yesterday, while another rumor reckons Nintendo may announce the new console platform as soon as during Gamescom, which is scheduled for late August.
