[Updated] Recent “Half-Life 3 Will Never Release” Rumor Put to Rest By Valve’s Marc Laidlaw-September 2024

[Update 2] Youtube channel The Know released a follow-up to their original story, after contacting Valve's Marc Laidlaw himself to clarify some details.

[Update] Valve News Network has released a quite interesting video in which Tyler McVicker talks about what the internet show, the Know (see original story below) got wrong about their latest report on Half-Life 3, and explains why the hugely anticipated game will actually release.

  [Original Story]

YouTube channel 'The Know' has reported on a rumor yesterday suggesting that even though the script for Half-Life 3 has supposedly been completed, Valve will never release the game, as it is not worth the risk. Understandably fans were upset and contacted the writer of Half-Life himself, Marc Laidlaw.

You can view the video posted by The Know below, followed by Laidlaw's response further down.

Marc Laidlaw said that this is probably trolling:

“anonymous sources have been posting speculation masquerading as inside knowledge since the Half Life 1 days, and that fear is the last thing that would ever drive a decision about what to work on.”

Laidlaw continued to explain regarding the story and script rumor:

“The story is created through the process of trying to figure out how to best use the features of the engine within the interesting set of constraints it poses. The story is part of the game. It doesn’t exist as a separate script that is handed off to game designers which they are expected to somehow make compelling through puzzles and combat.”

It's true that for a game like Half-Life the story is built around the game, it ties alongside it and is not governed by a pre-baked script. Laidlaw's response seems valid, and even though the game could be developed around a narrative, as is the case with many games, the Half-Life series strives to make the player feel more involved, with a more dynamic and interactive experience.

Whether these rumors are true or are just a case of trolling as Laidlaw suggests is unclear, but the fact remains that Valve can make-up or change their approach to a release for Half-Life 3, as they deem appropriate at any given time.
