The Last Of Us Part 2 Will Have "Much Wider Environments," Says Director-October 2024
Oct 25, 2024 4:20 AM

Considering The Last of Us Part II will be split between two discs, game director Neil Druckmann has spoken a little bit more about the graphical fidelity Naughty Dog is hoping to achieve when the post-apocalyptic sequel arrives in February 2020.

In an interview with the PlayStation blog, Druckmann confirmed that TLOU2 will have "much wider environments" thanks to the PlayStation 4's power. Druckmann compared TLOU2 to both The Last of Us and previous Uncharted games--like Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy--in order to hammer home just how much more "tense" the sequel is.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part 2 - What We Thought Of The Demo

"As you saw with Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, we're experimenting with much larger layouts," Druckmann said. “We're going to do that with [The Last of Us Part II], and find ways to use that to mirror the story."

Druckmann admitted that The Last of Us hit the limits of the PlayStation 3's computational power when it launched toward the tail-end of that console generation, and it seems TLOU2 will do the same. "Now we're able to have much wider environments, sequences with a horde of infected, several squads of enemies looking for you in big spaces."

Druckmann previously said that TLOU2 is Naughty Dog's longest game to date, so it remains to be seen just how much power the studio is able to squeeze out of the PS4 with the PlayStation 5 looming on the horizon. The Last of Us Part II is scheduled to launch exclusively for PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2020. Though unconfirmed, SIE CEO and president Jim Ryan has said that Sony's big first-party titles could appear on PS5 when it launches holiday 2020.
