The DFC Intelligence has updated the US Market for Video Games and Electronic Interactive Entertainment, its in-depth report on the present and future of the video game industry. The updated report estimates that the new generation of console platforms, which includes the Sony PlayStation 2, the Microsoft Xbox, and the Nintendo GameCube, will have combined US sales of more than 60 million units by 2005. Additionally, the Sony PlayStation 2 is viewed as the potential market leader under most scenarios set forth by the report. However, the report does contain scenarios where the PS2 is challenged aggressively in terms of market share by both the GameCube and the Xbox.

　　"We believe that over the next few years consumers will be spending a great deal of money on video and computer games," said David Cole, president of The DFC Intelligence. "Under most scenarios, the Sony PlayStation 2 is forecasted to be the leading system...the PlayStation 2 has the potential to be the best-selling game system ever.''

　　Unlike its latest report, The DFC Intelligence's original report--released in August 2000--was hesitant to predict a clear leader in the next-generation console race. The DFC Intelligence is a research firm that focuses on software entertainment.
