The Departed TV Show Under Consideration, Producer Says
The Departed TV Show Under Consideration, Producer Says-October 2024

While a Departed sequel is not happening anytime soon, it sounds like a TV adaptation of Martin Scorsese's 2006 Boston mob movie could be in the works. Speaking today at the 2016 DICE Summit, producer Roy Lee was asked to elaborate on the discussions for a sequel. In his response, he revealed that plans are potentially in place to bring the series to the small-screen.

"It got pretty serious," Lee said when asked about how far along discussions were for a movie sequel. "The original movie was based on a trilogy, so we had a take for the sequel. The only reason it didn't go forward was because some of the people involved did not want it going forward."

Lee went on to say that some Hollywood figures are so powerful that they can shut down a project at will. He said Steven Spielberg is of this ilk. However, Lee did not say which parties didn't want to see The Departed 2 come out.

As for The Departed's TV version, Lee didn't share much, saying only, "We are planning on doing an adaptation potentially for TV eventually."

The Departed begins by showing the characters played by Leonardo DiCpario and Matt Damon as children and young adults, but never goes very far into their lives at that time. A prequel series seems like it could work. Given all the bloodshed in The Departed, a direct sequel, on the other hand, would presumably be without many key characters, though that doesn't mean it wouldn't be interesting. It's also possible the TV spinoff would be entirely separate from the movie's storyline or focus on different characters in the Boston mob scene altogether. The possibilities are exciting to think about.

The Departed took home four Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, including Best Picture. The film, based on the 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs, also starred Jack Nicholson.
