Temple Run raced to success in 2012. The endless running game from the husband and wife development team at Imangi Studios was downloaded more than 75 million times in the App Store during the year, Apple announced today.
“We were simply looking to create a game that was fun and easy to play, but once it hit the App Store, the game took off," Imangi Studios producer Keith Shepherd said in a statement.
Temple Run is a free game in the App Store, though players can purchase Coin Packs add-ons from $1-$20. The game is also available for Android through the Google Play store. Sales data for that version has not been announced.
In all, Apple announced that more than 40 billion apps have been downloaded to date, with nearly 20 billion coming in 2012 alone. The App Store has over 500 million "active" accounts, and during the month of December 2012 alone, users downloaded over two billion apps.
More than 775,000 apps are available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users across the world. Apple has paid developers more than $7 billion dollars, the company said.
