Tekken 7 has debuted in Japanese arcades a few months and it's getting ready to be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sometime next year. The home console versions of the game will come with some additional features not found in the original arcade release as well as a character that few expected to see in a Tekken game: Akuma from the Street Fighter series. Not much else has been said about guest characters in the past few days but more on the matter has emerged online thanks to a new interview which has been shared online a few hours ago.
In a new interview with PlayStation Lifestyle, Senior Game Designer Michael Murray and Visual Design Manager Kousuke Waki have talked about Akuma's inclusion in the game. According to Mr. Murray, both he and producer Katsuhiro Harada are against guest characters because they throw off the Tekken world and setting, but Akuma fits the bill so much that the team tied him into the story.
And as far as more charters goes, right now, Akuma is the only one we have planned. Harada [Game Producer Katsuhiro Harada] and I have always been against guest characters because it kinda throws off the Tekken world and setting. But Akuma fits the bill, and we wanted to tie him into the story so that the crossover is not some cheesy gimmick.
Michael Murray has also talked about other guest characters. Akuma is for the moment the only planned guest character but the team is apparently open to the idea of including others in the future.
But no plans at the moment for additional crossovers, though we are open to the possibility in the future.
Tekken 7 is now available in Japanese arcades. The fighting game developed by Bandai Namco will be released on a yet to be confirmed 2016 date on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
