System of a Down frontman talks about what it's like to make music for a video game-October 2024

In case you forgot, System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian is making the music for Midnight Star (formerly Morning Star), the upcoming mobile game from Halo co-creator Alex Seropian's new studio Industrial Toys.

Tankian discussed the music making process in a new developer video from Industrial Toys, in which he explains at length his vision for the game's soundscapes and how went about recording the music.

"The video game thing has always been really interesting for me because it's kind of like creating a whole world of sound," Tankian said. "Especially with a video game that's dealing with other worlds. It's interesting creating sounds of other worlds that haven't existed before. "

The Midnight Star music is mostly orchestral and electronic (and sometimes hybridized), Tankian explained. Industrial Toys founder Tim Harris said Tankian has been so prolific in his music making for Midnight Star that the developer can't use everything he's provided.

You can hear clips of some of Tankian's music in the video below.

Midnight Star was built from the ground up for touch-based controls and is billed as a "complete reimagining of the shooter." Developed using the Unreal Engine, the game--due out this year--is set 120 years into the future and brings players aboard the MSRV-Joplin, a research vessel equipped with heavy weaponry.
