Nintendo dropped tons of bombshells today during their Super Smash Bros. Wii U presentation, but one of the biggest? Eight-player simultaneous battles. We've filled in some of the details from the presentation with notes from a press release sent out following the live stream.
You'll be able to play with up to eight-players simultaneously (but only locally). Interestingly, the GamCube controller adaptor only seems to support four controllers. So any additional controllers will have to be a combination of other methods (classic controller, Wiimote, etc). However, you can use your 3DS as a controller on Wii U. "This option appears only in the Wii U version, and lets players compete on even larger stages to accommodate all the characters."
We also got confirmation of the board game-like Smash Tour mode, which was inadvertently revealed through an Amazon posting earlier this month.

How wil Amiibo fighters work? "When a player touches an amiibo figure to the Wii U GamePad, the character joins as a “figure player.” The amiibo figures can gain levels to become stronger and add equipment as they gain experience through battling. Players can have amiibo fight one another, and amiibo will bring you presents from the battles they fight in."
The individual Smash fighters have a long gaming history, and you'll be able to demo some of their biggest titles within the Wii U version of Smash. While the presentation didn't specify how much game time you'd get with the classic games from Smash fighter's roster, the demos will link you to the Nintendo e-shop in case you want to buy them. Nintendo describes them as "cut-down versions of the characters’ greatest games."
That leaked stage creator? That's in the game as well. You'll be able to craft stages for your friends to fight in by drawing original creations and filling them with items. Nintendo writes, "The touch screen of the Wii U GamePad makes it easier than ever for players to build their own stages and eventually share them with friends and other players around the world using broadband Internet access."
Mewtwo will be a downloadable fighter available if you buy both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. The character will be available for free on both systems, but its still in development and is scheduled for release sometime in Spring 2015.
Import your customized fighters into the Wii U version of Smash: "Fans of the Nintendo 3DS version of the game can immediately benefit from the fruits of their smashing labors. Players can import custom Nintendo 3DS fighters to the Wii U game, along with their customized equipment, costumes and hats."
Ridely, the evil Mainstay of the Metroid series, is finally coming to the game: "Fans have been clamoring for Ridley to appear in a Super Smash Bros.game for a while, and now they’re getting their wish. But true to form, Ridley appears in an unexpected way. Players will find him in the Metroid series-inspired Pyrosphere stage, but he does more than just hassle players. If one player attacks Ridley enough, Ridley will join that fighter’s side and attack others. Players (including the one on Ridley’s side) can KO Ridley to earn a point toward the match result total. And if Ridley consumes enough energy, he will become Meta Ridley and all the more vicious."
The original story appears below.
Nintendo announced earlier this month that they'll be revealing "50 new things" coming to Super Smash Bros. on Wii U, and you can watch that presentation right here through the embedded video above.
The presentation is set to start at 3PM PST / 6PM ET.
Leaks have revealed that the game will have a stage creator and a "board game" mode, and we're expecting to hear something about that during the stream. But what do you most want to hear about? Let us know in the comments below!
We'll be updating this story with additional details as they're revealed.
