Super Mario Bros Wonder Sales Exceed 4.3 Million Units; Nintendo Not Bound By “Traditional” Platform Lifecycle-October 2024
Oct 27, 2024 4:25 PM

Global Super Mario Bros Wonder sales have surpassed 4.3 million units in just two weeks, Nintendo has announced.

Yesterday, Nintendo released its half-year financial report, revealing that worldwide Nintendo Switch sales have surpassed 132.46 million units. It was also revealed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom nearly sold 20 million copies following its release this May. Today, the company released a presentation for the second quarter financial results for Nintendo's current Fiscal Year, which runs through March 2024. In this presentation, Nintendo revealed that the latest Super Mario entry has become the fastest-selling Super Mario-related game (limited to releases for Wii and Nintendo DS onwards, when software sell-through data collection began).

"Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which was released worldwide on October 20, achieved global cumulative sales of 4.3 million units within the first two weeks", the presentation reads. "This makes it the fastest-selling Super Mario related title". We've included a screenshot of the slide below:

Another interesting slide in the presentation includes Nintendo's future outlook, mentioning that Switch has entered its eighth year after having been released in 2017. More interestingly, however, is that, in the same slide, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa says that the company will continue to keep releasing new Switch titles "without being bound by the traditional concept of platform lifecycle". The slide also mentions that Nintendo intends to maintain and expand user engagement. "Going forward, we would like to continue to see many consumers play Nintendo Switch and to maintain our business momentum."Despite numerous rumors about a Switch successor (which is likely at this point during the platform's lifecycle), Furukawa yesterday said that recent Switch 2 reports aren't accurate, thereby referring to reports about the Switch 2 being shown off to developers at this year's GamesCom 2023 event.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is available worldwide now for the Nintendo Switch. Here's what we wrote about this 2D Mario installment in our launch review: "Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the plumber’s best platformer this generation", Nathan Birch wrote. "We haven’t been able to say that of a 2D Mario for a long time, but this game measures up to the best and most beloved side-scrollers Nintendo has ever made, delivering joyously-creative level design and rock-solid platforming in a gorgeous wrapper. Get ready to kick it old school, because 2D Mario is back on top of the flagpole."
