Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Reportedly “Not Being Worked on in Any Way”
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Reportedly “Not Being Worked on in Any Way”-November 2024
Nov 13, 2024 1:54 PM

The vibes surrounding the new PS5-exclusive version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic have not been positive for some time, with the Embracer Group’s CEO refusing to even comment on the project during their most recent earnings call because anything he said would “become a headline” (of course, this became a headline). Sony also tellingly pulled down the announcement trailer for the project and scrubbed any references to it from social media.

So, is there any hope? While the KOTOR remake hasn’t been fully canceled yet, during the latest Game Mess Mornings livesteam, insider Jeff Grubb poured some cold water on any lingering excitement, saying the KOTOR remake is currently not in development, at any studio, in any way.

"To clear it up, this game is not being worked on right now. Just full stop, this game is not being worked on in any way at any studio. [...] I've looked into it, and I don't think this is news to most of you... you can piece this together if you've been listening to this. Sony stepping away and scrubbing mentions of Knights of the Old Republic from social media and YouTube. But just to 100 percent to confirm it, this game is not being worked on right now."

Of course, take this with a grain of salt for now, but still… that’s a pretty definitive statement. Grubb does leave the door open a bit, saying the game is not being worked on right now, but it’s pretty rare for a game to go into a complete development hiatus and still emerge later.

For those who haven’t been keeping up, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was originally in development at Texas-based studio Aspyr, but it was reported the project was taken from them after a vertical slice was poorly received by Lucasfilm and Sony. The project was then transferred to another division within the Embracer Group, rumored, but never confirmed, to be Saber Interactive. Apparently, that didn’t work out well either.

What do you think? Is the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake still have a chance? Or will the game remain in the past?
