Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Dead Island 2, and More Exciting Games Coming Out in April
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Dead Island 2, and More Exciting Games Coming Out in April-October 2024
Oct 26, 2024 3:27 PM

Keeping track of all the latest games coming out is an increasingly complex task, what with multiple PC storefronts, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, mobile, and more to keep track of, but don’t worry, I’m here to help. Every month I'll be running down the games you need to be keeping an eye on, from the big triple-A headliners, to the intriguing indies you might otherwise overlook.

April isn’t quite as busy as the first couple months of the year were, but there are still some big  games to look forward to, including Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and development-hell-survivor Dead Island 2. Meanwhile, on the indie front, players can look forward to Behaviour Interactive’s latest Meet Your Maker, the super-stylish The Last Case of Benedict Fox, and more.

Note: While I may have played demos or got early access to some of the games recommended in this article, in most cases I’m simply choosing games that look promising, and can’t vouch for the end product. Do wait for reviews before buying!

That said, here are the games you should be looking out for in April…

The Headliners

Minecraft Legends (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 & Switch, April 18)

Mojang’s blocky franchise branches out yet again, with Minecraft Legends. Developed by Hardspace: Shipbreaker and Homeworld 3 developer Blackbird Interactive, Minecraft Legends combines exploration, strategy, and base building into a unique package. Will this be too complex for Minecraft’s mostly-young fanbase? That remains to be seen, but with co-op in the mix, you can strategize with your kids. You can pre-order Minecraft Legends here.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (Switch, April 21)

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp has been stuck in limbo for a while now as Nintendo indefinitely delayed the game following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Well, I guess Nintendo got tired of waiting for world peace, because the game is finally coming our way in April. As for the game itself, it’s pretty much what it says on the tin – the two classic GBA Advance Wars titles on the Switch with an updated presentation. Get ready to let loose the adorable anime dogs of war. You can pre-order Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp here.

  Dead Island 2 (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, April 21)

Yes, believe it or not, Dead Island 2 is actually coming out. Bouncing through no less than four developers (from Techland, to Yager Development, to Sumo Digital, to Dambuster Studios) since being announced almost a decade ago, most had written the game off as vaporware. That said, the final product actually looks… pretty alright! Not groundbreaking, but tongue-in-cheek, bloody fun. Need more information? Here’s everything you need to know. You can pre-order Dead Island 2 here.

Honkai: Star Rail (PC & mobile, April 26)

Genshin Impact has gone on to become one of the biggest games in the world since arriving back in 2020, and now developer HoYoverse is about to drop its next big project, Honkai: Star Rail. Unlike Genshin Impact with its Zelda-esque action and exploration, Honkai: Star Rail is more of a traditional RPG, with semi-strategic turn-based battles. That said, make no mistake, gacha-style loot boxes that offer up an array of colorful unlockable anime characters are definitely still in. Honkai: Star Rail will be free to play, but you can pre-register here.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (PC, Xbox Series X/S & PS5, April 28)

The sequel to Respawn’s well-received Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is almost here. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor offers a bigger world, with some large, semi-open-world planets, more intense action, and next/current-gen-exclusive presentation. Survivor’s story looks a little more substantial too, with hints of more connection between the game and the Star Wars movies. Need more information? Here’s everything you need to know. You can pre-order Star Wars Jedi: Survivor here.

Promising Indies

Meet Your Maker (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, April 4)

Meet Your Maker is the latest from Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive, but don’t expect another asymmetric horror game. Meet Your Maker is all about building and raiding, as players will be able to create their own blocky dungeon-like outposts in order to mine precious “pure genetic material.” Ah, but once you’ve created an outpost, other players can try to best your trap-and-mutant-filled challenges in order to steal your genetic material. Basically, it’s Mario Maker meet Minecraft, with a little bit of Doom mixed in. Yeah, it’s weird, but sometimes weird is good. Here’s the Steam page for Meet Your Maker.

  Wall World (PC, April 5)

Speaking of weird, meet Wall World. Described as a “mining rogue-lite with tower defense elements,” Wall World puts players in control of a large robospider base, which crawls up and down an endless vertical wall. The robospider can send miners into the rockface to collect materials, but also has to fight off weird Lovecraftian creatures that attack from the sky. I’m not sure if this one’s so crazy its brilliant, or just crazy, but I’m leaning toward the former. Here’s the Steam page for Wall World.

Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 & Switch, April 20)

The original Coffee Talk delivered exactly what the title promised – you played as a barista in a coffee shop that happened to be frequented by a variety of mythological creatures and monsters and you talked through their various problems. That may not sound that thrilling, but the game was engaging in a chill sort of way. Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly looks to deliver more of the same, with more oddballs to meet and fancier coffees to brew. Here’s the Steam page for Coffee Talk Episode 2.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox (PC & Xbox Series X/S, April 27)

Indie Metroidvanias are a dime-a-dozen these days, but The Last Case of Benedict Fox is still worth your attention. Featuring beautiful visuals, a stylish noir-ish Lovecraftian world, and a unique mechanic that sees you exploring the minds of the recently-deceased for clues, this one looks to be anything but another run-of-the-mill action-platformer. Here’s the Steam page for The Last Case of Benedict Fox.
