The crowdfunding campaign for Chris Roberts' upcoming PC space simulator Star Citizen has surpassed $26 million, elevating the most successful crowdfunded project in history to new heights. The campaign added more than $1 million in one week.
At press time, funding stands at $26,111,266 from 291,858 backers.
Reaching $26 million means developer Cloud Imperium Games will expand the game's capital ship mechanics and functionality. Players will now be able to lead a damage control team to fight fires and repair stations during battle and control internal bulkheads to slow boarders.
To mark the $26 million achievement, Cloud Imperium Games released the first in-engine images of the Idris corvette's interior, including the hangar bay and engine room.
Should Star Citizen funding reach $28 million, Cloud Imperium Games will add a second option for players' starter ships. This new ship, the Mustang, will be offered for sale alongside the Aurora.
"The Mustang isn't planned as a replacement for the Aurora; it's another option that may better suit some play-styles," Roberts said. "Want a reliable personal starship? Go with the Aurora. Want something with a little more power, at the expense of cargo? Try the Mustang!"
Roberts said a "top concept artist" is being sought to develop the look of the Mustang. When it is ready, players will be able to purchase the ship from the pledge store. Players can also swap from the Aurora to the Mustang at no extra cost.
Star Citizen has been in development at Cloud Imperium Games for more than a year. The game itself centers on a storyline that is set in a persistent online universe. Last month, Cloud Imperium Games announced a modding competition for the game.
Roberts has said that Star Citizen will fuse elements of his previous games, Wing Commander and Freelancer. Support for the virtual-reality headset Oculus Rift is planned.
Star Citizen is expected to be released in late 2014.
