Square Enix Will Keep Releasing Xbox One And PS4 Games Alongside Next-Gen Versions-October 2024
Oct 31, 2024 11:22 AM

Some major game publishers are likely champing at the bit to release exclusively next-generation games this holiday, but Square Enix isn't one of them. The company is planning on supporting both generations for now, and backward compatibility is a major reason why.

Speaking at a financial Q&A presentation earlier this month, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda explained that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will both support previous generations' games. In the near-future, Square Enix will develop games for both generations, and will hold off on developing next-gen exclusives for the time being.

"It will therefore be somewhat [further] down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles," Matsuda said.

The publisher took a similar approach when Xbox One and PS4 were new. Games like Thief and Murdered: Soul Suspect both released on two generations, while Drakengard 3 skipped the PS4 entirely. With the upcoming generation, all PS4 and Xbox One games should work on their respective companies' new hardware.

With Final Fantasy VII Remake releasing episodically and the first part not scheduled to launch until April 10, Square Enix' plan could ensure that the entire game is available on PlayStation 4 when it's complete. There's no indication of when exactly that will be, but the second installment has not been delayed because of the first part's delay.

Square Enix still has several upcoming games releasing on PS4 and Xbox One, including Marvel's Avengers and Babylon's Fall. It's also publishing the People Can Fly shooter Outriders, which will release on current-generation and next-generation platforms later this year.
