Spyro Reignited Trilogy Review Roundup
Spyro Reignited Trilogy Review Roundup-October 2024
Oct 24, 2024 10:27 AM

Spyro the Dragon was one of the biggest gaming mascots of the '90s, and he's responsible for many people's nostalgia for that era of gaming. Now he's back in the Reignited Trilogy on PS4 and Xbox One.

The Reignited Trilogy includes remastered versions of the first three Spyro games: Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (also known as Gateway to Glimmer in Europe and Australia), and Year of the Dragon. The purple dragon's voice actor from that trilogy, Tom Kenny, has returned, while Stewart Copeland's iconic soundtrack has been revamped. But does all this make for a good remaster?

GameSpot's Spyro Reignited Trilogy review awarded the games an 8/10, with critic Justin Clark stating the bundle is the "best kind of collection." For a broader look at the game's reception, read a selection of reviews below, or take a wider view of critical opinion on GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

Game: Spyro Reignited TrilogyPlatforms: PS4, Xbox OneDeveloper / publisher: Toys for Bob / ActivisionRelease date: Out nowPrice: US $40 / £35 / AU $70

GameSpot -- 8/10

"The Reignited Trilogy is the best kind of collection that not only brings a beloved series up to current visual standards but also proves just how well-built the original titles were. Granted, the originals were done by a little studio called Insomniac, and it's not exactly surprising something that team did is a fine example of the genre. But the Reignited Trilogy's developer, Toys for Bob, deserves major kudos for bringing Insomniac's vision to life in the way we could've only dreamed in 1998." -- Justin Clark [Full review]

IGN -- 8.5/10

"Toys for Bob has done a great job of filling Spyro's first three adventures with such reinvigorated life. Worlds are packed to the brim with more detail, animations are consistently endearing, and the quality of life improvements make revisiting these once analog stick-less platformers a joy to play. They're definitely easier thanks to some of those changes, but no less charming to play. It's great to see Spyro's return treated with such love and care, and I hope renewed interest in his past can light the way for his future." -- Jonathon Dornbush [Full review]

Eurogamer -- No score

"If you want a blast from the past, Spyro Reignited Trilogy will certainly stoke the fires of nostalgia. Thanks to its charming redesign and smooth controls, exploring Spyro's world is a rather magical experience for returning players, while its soft and welcoming aesthetics could make this a hit with a new generation of youngsters. And, importantly, it feels good to control. Yet once the novelty wears off, I'm left without a burning desire to return--making this an intriguing window into the way we used to play, but one which I won't gaze through repeatedly." -- Emma Kent [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4/5

"My experience with Spyro Reignited began with apprehension upon noticing that a thing I love has changed, followed by acceptance, followed by excitement to see where these new paths and features would lead. It was not always the journey I expected or remembered, but it's a joyous trip down memory lane well worth taking." -- Sam Prell [Full review]

Game Informer -- 8.5/10

"Given just how different the worlds look in remastered form, I found this trilogy to be more interesting and enjoyable to return to than Crash’s. These games don’t preserve history as well, but that's okay. Having already lived through them, it's fascinating to see how the worlds have been reimagined and differ from the vision I had in my head. If you've never played these games before, I can't recommend them enough. From a historical standpoint, you can clearly see the foundation for Insomnaic's Ratchet & Clank series in each level. As a game, Spyro is a blast to control, and collecting gems is an oddly satisfying thing to do. You'll watch the credits roll on each game before you know what hit you." -- Andrew Reiner [Full review]
