Aureal is best known as the maker of the Vortex lineup of audio processors capable of running its A3D positional audio technology. To help compliment the company's audio skills, Aureal will introduce 2.1 and 4.1 speaker/subwoofer products this fall. The new speakers will be sold through Aureal's online store in conjunction with its Vortex sound cards.
"Our new products are a merger of multimedia and home stereo designs, bringing a much higher standard of audio to the PC arena," said Kip Kokinakis, Aureal's president and CEO.
Aureal's currently unnamed speakers systems will feature auto-calibration, where a small microphone listens to test tones to optimize for the best audio performance. A one-touch control and display on one of the speakers will give audiophiles quick access to volume, bass, fader and other options, while providing similar controls on their desktops. For those worrying about buying the 2.1 and wanting a 4.1 setup will also have an easy option to upgrade without having to purchase another speaker system. With a 35-watt speaker amp and 70-watt subwoofer amp - the speakers may be the most powerful multimedia speakers ever.
For some weeks now, we've heard that Aureal would be getting into the retail business in some way. Aureal is definitely hoping to fill the several gaps left open by its main competitor, Creative Labs. While Creative has several speaker products in the market, upgrading them is impossible, so gamers may feel better about purchasing Aureal's 2.1 speaker solution with the promise of an easy upgrade to 4.1 later. With the upcoming launch of its first speaker systems - the selling of Aureal-branded retail cards may not be far behind. When we get a pair of the speakers, we'll let you know how they sound.
