Sega's Dreamy Future
Sega's Dreamy Future-March 2024
Mar 19, 2025 7:44 AM

Dreamcast. While in the US we wait for the system to land, in Japan, it's only a week away. Sega announced Thursday that it expects to sell 500,000 systems by the end of '98, with one million by the end of the fiscal year (ending March '99).

Sega needs the shot in the arm that the Dreamcast could provide. Its net profits for the period from April '98 to September '98 fell 75.9 percent to 1.21 billion yen ($10.1 million), from 5.03 billion yen ($42 million) in the previous year. Sales dropped 20.4 percent to 100.93 billion yen ($841 million) from 126.75 billion yen ($1.06 billion).

The outlook for the full year will be better, if the Dreamcast succeeds in meeting Sega's goals. The company predicts net profits to rise to 1.6 billion yen ($13.3 million) from a loss of 35.64 billion yen ($297 million) from last year. It estimates sales of Dreamcast hardware and software will generation 53.5 billion yen in sales by the end of the fiscal year.
