Sega Vice Chairman to Step Down
Sega Vice Chairman to Step Down-January 2024
Jan 8, 2025 5:50 AM

TOKYO - Japanese trade wire Nikkei Shinbun has reported that Hayao Nakayama, the vice chairman of Sega Enterprises, will be acceding to chairman of Pasona, one of the leading temporary-staffing agencies in Japan. To take this new office, according to the report, Nakayama will leave Sega Enterprises.

Currently there is major restructuring going on within Sega Enterprises. Part of the restructuring procedure includes closing Sega's AM division (Sega's arcade machine unit) - the same division that Nakayama is the head of. We assume that this closing is the reason for his departure.

During his presidency, Mr. Nakayama was widely recognized as a prime factor in Sega's rise to one of the leading game producers in Japan - especially for the company's success in the arcade field. However, after the Saturn's failure, he stepped down from president to become vice chairman of Sega.

Even before Nakayama stepped down, though, Sega's infamous triumvirate (Shouichiro Irimajiri, Isao Okawa, and Nakayama) accepted the blame for Sega's recent lack of direction.

According to Nikkei, despite leaving Sega, Nakayama will remain the chairman of Sega Toys, the Sega-owned toy division. This shift will be approved in a director's meeting to be held on May 28.
