Eight hundred Sega USA and SegaSoft employees will soon relocate from the glass and steel confines of Redwood City to funky new San Francisco digs.
Come January 4, 1999, the company will reside at 650 Townsend Street, in San Francisco's Multimedia Gulch. Sega has signed a ten-year lease. Sega's US headquarters and two of its sister firms, SegaSoft Networks and Sega Entertainment will be moving into the building, bringing with them 800 staffers.
Sega was attracted to the San Francisco site because of New Jobs Tax Credits and State Enterprise Zone incentives, according to the San Francisco Partnership and the city mayor's Office of Economic Development. By moving into the Townsend Center, Sega will reduce its corporate office costs.
"Sega is excited to be moving to San Francisco, the birthplace of interactive media," Bernie Stolar, president and COO of Sega of America said in a statement. "A dynamic creative community and one of the world's best places to live and work make San Francisco the ideal location for Sega, particularly as we prepare to launch our super console video game system, Dreamcast, in 1999."
