Sega Dreamcast Goes Platinum-October 2024
Oct 28, 2024 2:39 PM

Sega of America announced today that the Dreamcast has sold one million units in North America since its Sept. 9 launch. This figure comes six weeks ahead of corporate predictions and before the official holiday shopping season that begins immediately after Thanksgiving.

The Sony PlayStation, which was launched in September 1995, sold one million units in one and a half years, according to the NPD Group. The console system is also seeing record-breaking sales in Europe. Since it was launched on Oct. 14 in Europe, Sega of Europe has sold more than 400,000 units, surpassing previous company estimates and unit sales numbers by Sega's competitors.

In addition to hardware sales in North America, software is also selling at a brisk pace. Sega of America today reported a 3:1 software-to-hardware sales ratio that is expected to continue through the holiday season. This new statistic states states that for every console purchased, the typical consumer also buys three games, increasing the average sale transaction to approximately US$325.
