Kaz Hirai is a familiar face in the game industry. He was part of the PlayStation launch team that first set up its US beachhead in 1996. Today, some 19 years after he first joined the Sony organization, he has been promoted to the position of CEO of SCEA.
Hirai will maintain his current roles of SCEA president and board member, as well as SCE group corporate executive officer, and he will continue to report to Ken Kutaragi.
Hirai is credited by Sony with helping launch the original PlayStation, overseeing the PlayStation business since 1996 in North America (now SCE's largest market), guiding SCEA toward its goals of notching more than 20 million in PS2 unit sales in less than three years, and launching the console's online component in North America last year.
Last October he was named the fourth most powerful executive in the entertainment industry by Entertainment Weekly, and this July he was named to the Business 2.0 Dream Team.
