S3's Savage3D Gets Support
S3's Savage3D Gets Support-November 2024
Nov 1, 2024 12:39 PM

S3 Incorporated is planning for a big comeback with its new Savage3D chip, and on Monday the company is happy to report both STB and Diamond Multimedia will use the chip to power new add-in video boards.

STB's Nitro 3200 will ship with 8MB of 125MHz SDRAM, a 250MHz RAMDAC, a TV-out port, and optimized drivers for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0.

Diamond had no immediate information about its currently unnamed board.

The Savage3D is a 2D/3D AGP-based chip with built-in capabilities for DVD and video playback, single-cycle trilinear filtering, optimized AGP 2X support, and the use of its Microsoft-endorsed texture compression technology (due in DirectX 6.0.)

S3's S3TC texture compression technology allows DirectX to compress textures up to 1/6 of its normal size, this makes for more room for holding additional textures, which should give boards with the chipset AGP 4.X-like performance.

STB's Nitro 3200 should hit shelves in late summer with Diamond's board following for a Christmas release.
