During our time spent with Namco at the CTIA convention, we took a look at a number of Namco's classic arcade games, which have recently been updated for mobile phones. One such title was Galaga, the seminal 1981 arcade shooter that pitted your little spaceship against hordes of alien bugs. The updated version of Galaga looks like it's just about what you would expect from a mobile game. The control scheme used in the game seems pretty simple. You use the arrow buttons to move your ship back and forth, and you use the zero button to shoot. The shooting itself feels just fine, though the actual movement of the ship does seem to stutter a bit.
Graphically, the look of the game actually seems quite nice. On the lower-model phone we tested it on, the game ran at around 10 frames a second. Namco informed us that on better phones it would run even faster. The aspect ratio used in the game looks roughly arcade-perfect, and the game even features a two-player handoff-style multiplayer functionality.
From our time spent with the game, it seems as though Galaga fans might just wind up with a worthwhile version of the game to play on their mobile phones when it's released this winter. We'll bring you more on the game as its release draws closer.
