S3 issued a statement this afternoon regarding the apparent lack of hardware T&L support on the Viper II. GameSpot first broke the story in a news article written from the Comdex show floor, and online rumors have been flying around since. Here's S3's response:
"The Transformation and Lighting engine on S3's Viper II works. However, it was not completely enabled in the first driver rev that shipped to retail last Friday (Nov. 19). S3 focused on performance, stability, and optimizing feature sets for today's games. Transformation and lighting capabilities will be available in soon-to-be-released drivers. We anticipate driver availability in OpenGL around the first part of December."
S3 told GameSpot News that T&L enabled drivers will be ready sometime in January, around the same time that the faster Viper II, equipped with the Savage2000+ chipset, is scheduled to launch. We'll keep you updated.
