RTIME Inc. has received a patent for its RTIME Interactive Networking Engine from the US Patent and Trademark Office. RTIME's engine is used primarily to enable multiplayer gaming over the Internet; Acclaim and Ripcord Games are among the companies using the engine (Acclaim for Turok 2's multiplayer matches and Ripcord for SpecOps: Ranger Team Bravo).
The patent (U.S. No. 5,841,980 for those keeping score at home) is made up of 54 individual claims that cover facets of what RTIME calls "distributed, interactive communication systems." Among the aspects of its engine that RTIME made claims on are its "realtime data filtering, whereby only relevant data is distributed to each interested party." RTIME's global time base, which keeps users synchronized to overcome lag, also falls under the patent.
