Not long after Rocket League developer Psyonix teased big plans to support the soccer-with-cars game in the area of Esports, the studio today announced the first-ever Rocket League Championship Series. It is described as "the official competitive league" for the game; matches will be streamed on Twitch.

"From the moment we hit the pitch last July, we knew that Rocket League was a legitimate esport," Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham said in a statement. "Twitch and its streamers have been an instrumental part of our success since we launched last July, and that made them a perfect match for us. We couldn't be more thrilled to be working with a team that we respect as highly as we do Twitch, and we can't wait to show the world what we can do in esports together!"

The Rocket League Championship Series begins this month with its first season. Matches will be played in the standard setup of 3v3 and the season will last for three months. It begins with open qualifiers, with teams weeded out until only two remain. A total of $75,000 in prize money will be up for grabs.

Additionally, Psyonix confirmed that all matches will be played on PlayStation 4 and PC, though it added that "additional platform support" (i.e. Xbox One) will be discussed in the future.

Further details on the Rocket League Championship, including how to sign up and more, are available here on the new Rocket League Esports website.
